Words

My tutor didn't expect the members of the class to know the words 'flouting' and 'meta'. This seems rather pessimistic to me. Do I underestimate my own vocabulary?

I don't think so but then I always get told I'm good at using "big words" so I'm not really one to comment!

Hmmm

I'd have expected a reasonable number of people to know 'flouting' even if it was only because it has been in the news rather often recently along with Iraq and UN resolution. I guess 'meta' is a bit of a strange word and unless you come across metaphysics or metadata often you might not notice it.

If you look very closely (or possibly have a larger version of the picture) it's Hemlock. Drawn in a stylised black and grey way.

Strictly speaking, I'm not sure that "meta" is a word. Or at least I suspect that your tutor probably prefers to use it only as a prefix ;-)

Of course it's a word - it means "with" and takes the genitive, I believe.

Damn you and your Anglosemanticentrism.

Remember that 85% of the population still believes that a rebel "flaunts authority". Statistically proven.

Depends how the question was phrased - for instance in a spoken questionnaire I don't think it would be very difficult to persuade people to agree with the statement "a rebel is someone who flaunts authority".

Especially if it was one of a whole list of things tested, or if you used a "how do you spell joke, how do you spell folk, what's the name of the white of an egg?" style trick.
