My tutor didn't expect the members of the class to know the words 'flouting' and 'meta'. This seems rather pessimistic to me. Do I underestimate my own vocabulary?

Depends how the question was phrased - for instance in a spoken questionnaire I don't think it would be very difficult to persuade people to agree with the statement "a rebel is someone who flaunts authority".

Especially if it was one of a whole list of things tested, or if you used a "how do you spell joke, how do you spell folk, what's the name of the white of an egg?" style trick.
