Knot knitting

The knotwork I was talking about back in November is now well on its way to being a cable panel on a purple jumper...





There's a *cough* deliberate error at the bottom of the panel, where I got distracted (by a game of Arkham Horror, I think), and moved my cables in the wrong direction, but I don't think anyone but me (and now you) will realise it's an error, or even notice it's different from the equivalent section further up (the bit currently at the top of the panel). I'm really happy with the way it's turned out, knitted - just as I wanted it to be. I now have to hope that the finished garment works, too. <crosses fingers>

Incidentally, the knitting is laid out on the flap of my bureau-desk, which we moved back into place, and I refilled yesterday, after it spent the last two weeks emptied and shifted to allow access for some pipe-welding smiorgan has been indulging in. I love my desk, and half the time I'm sitting here, I'm looking at the books on its shelves, or the various toys and pictures scattered around and stuck to it. I felt surprisingly bereft without it. <hugs desk>



(The covered-with-pictures bits are the insides of the doors. It looks perfectly plain and boring when the doors are closed.)

(Without thinking, I asked the woman in a wool shop yarn store in Baltimore how much Manos it would take to make a jumper, and it took me several seconds to work out why she looked confused ;-)

I'm a bit of a desk obsessive. There's a thread back in the dim mists of my LJ where I list the contents of my then-desk, and invite my readers to do the same. Since then, I've almost posted similar things several times, only to find myself wondering what the socially-acceptable interval is between instances of talking about and asking others about desks ;-)

Oh god, me too. I was a bit like that, pre-Rogue, but Rogue has really hooked me. Next stop would be an allover-cable Aran-style jumper, if I thought I'd wear it when finished. Hmm, maybe my next challenge is to adapt an Aran-style jumper into something I would wear, and cover every inch with cables, muahahaha!

my parents have that desk! theirs [i never know if i am supposed to put an apostrophe there...] is red, and i've been coveting it.

was it v. difficult to put together? i only saw theirs after it was done.

Is theirs from Ikea? (Do you have Ikea in the US?) Mine was pretty straightforward to put together - took me and secretrebel a couple of hours, I think. You couldn't do it on your own, and it'd be a bit scary if you'd never done any other flat-pack furniture, but not bad. (Although I need to refix the front of the drawer, because it's come off. But I never use the drawer anyway.) It's lovely. It's my second-favourite piece of furniture in the whole world. (After our bed, of course.)

According to Wikipedia, what we call a jumper, you would call a pinafore?

Apparently so. Although I think Wikipedia's wrong to say "pinafore dress" only applies in formal language - if I said pinafore, I'd mean a certain type of apron (although I'd still probably be more likely to say "apron").

I've never actually encountered the American usage of "jumper" (other than to understand that it's different from the British usage), but the results of a Google image search for "pinafore dress" look like what I think it means (searching for just "pinafore" brings up several aprons, as well as dresses). We also call it a gymslip, btw, although that's likely to be in school uniform contexts, and probably slightly archaic.

(And we do know what sweater means, and might write it, but would be unlikely to say it.)

And I suppose I should have said "pullover jumper," instead of "sweater jumper." Sweater is much more generic.

So, you do get the joke then about the woman driving down the street while knitting, paying little attention to the road. A police officer pulls up behind her with his lights flashing and siren wailing, but she doesn't notice. Finally, he pulls alongside her and starts yelling, "Pull over!" She smiles sweetly and says, "Why, no, officer, it's a cardigan!"

It's for me. I'm sort of in awe of people who knit jumpers for other people - it takes so long, and the result isn't guaranteed, and it seems like too big a risk ;-)

Sweetie, i've only just managed to knit in a circle and I'm not sure I've done that properly, the only way it is hidden is because I'm using very forgiving wool (that furry cashmere type pink stuff you gave me, which is actually ok, and i'm going to look for a black version of for a jumper thing)

last week I started knitting using a Knifty Knitter loom. It's like knitting, only way easier (I sort of theoretically know how to really knit, but can never keep the tension right). It's fun! I shall send some to Bea & Ryan once developmentally appropriate...
