Blogs and feeds

I've been vaguely using LJ as an RSS feed reader for ages, but have just started moving over to Google Reader, and am trying to impose some order on the non-LJ stuff I'm reading. And part of 'imposing order' means gathering up new and exciting stuff to read.

So! Please recommend me some feeds! What's the best non-LJ blog you read? What do you think everyone [who is/does x] should read? What's your favourite web comic? Do you have your very own non-LJ blog?

I delete everything from my RSS reader every 18 months or so, to stop it getting overburdened - the theory is that I'll only remember to re-add the stuff I actually found useful, and have space for new things, and not for ever have more to read than I can possibly manage. And I'm at a fairly low ebb at the moment. But off the top of my head, and in a sort-of thematically linked ramble...

Things is collections of links about interesting stuff, very irregular, no real consistent theme though some skewing towards architecture; Strange Harvest is more commentary, less links, more architecture-and-design focused; City of Sound is all design and cities and books; Infovore is mostly links with brief commentary, lots of design and game stuff; Raph Koster is lots of game-related stuff from a designy angle. Hm, it's fairly clear where my obsessions are these days. Mimi Smartypants is not connected to any of my current obsessions but is great, very personable and cheerful-cross-cheerful, and writing in the kind-of "here are some things that happened that were amusing for these reasons, here are some links, hello, conversation conversation, HOORAY!" tone that is part of what I like about many people's livejournals.

Things I am involved in: The Sandpit is allegedly Interesting Games+Cities Stuff from a few people involved with the Hide and Seek festival, but we have been very lax about ever actually writing anything. But we had a meeting last week where we sternly resolved to do so. We'll see. Minor Delays is (in the process of becoming) a short story for every tube station, in alphabetical order - currently up to Barkingside.

I think people should read fewer mediocre feeds and update their LJs more. ;-P

If you don't already follow it, you might enjoy Hathor Legacy. I find it a bit hit-and-miss, but still more than worth following for the better entries. Their feeds page is here.

Blogs - Shapely Prose, Neil Gaiman, Already Pretty, Fashion for Nerds, Ysolda and Needled are all more-or-less daily reads. Shakesville is good although I stopped reading it a few months ago due to US election fatigue and haven't restarted (really should do).

And I have two active non-LJ blogs and one semi-defunct one, but I think you know about all of them.

I have all three of your other blogs on the list already, and was in fact wondering about the fate of the semi-defunct one while I was adding it.

http://leninology.blogspot.com/atom.xml is a laugh a minute if you like vitriolic socialism. The best non-LJ blog I read is either that (for tenacity) or http://feeds.feedburner.com/schneier/excerpts. http://www.badscience.net/?feed=rss2 is good too.

http://www.idlewords.com/index.xml is usually great when it happens, but very irregular. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/rss/articles/editorials/zeropunctuation is usually good, but not technically a blog. I read http://docbrite.livejournal.com/data/rss because it's a lot about New Orleans.

Regarding comics, http://feeds.feedburner.com/freakangels is pootling along, but nothing spectacular yet. http://irregularwebcomic.net/darthsanddroids/rss.xml used to be good, but just moved onto the second film. It's worth reading up to now, but I may soon ditch it, since I can't remember anything about Send In The Clones except that as predicted Yoda fighting looked like Kermit fighting in Muppet Treasure Island. The other comics I read you've heard of.
