Our doorbell stopped working ages ago. At the weekend, we finally got around to installing a new one - it's cordless, the noise-making part of it is portable, and it has two different rings: an innocent ding-dong one and an irritating ding-dong ding-dong dong-ding ding-dong etc one. Naturally, we've set it to use the innocent one.

So it came as a surprise just now when the irritating one played. It was even more of a surprise when I went to answer the door and discovered no one there. And it just got worse when the thing played again, with me standing at the door pondering the mysteries of our new doorbell.

So it seems that our doorbell also picks up someone else's. I'm curious about whether their doorbell also picks up ours, and who they are (they're not either of our next-door neighbours) - I'm going to do some experiments this evening, since they don't seem to be at home now.

Two different software men have each spent a morning examining my computer, and the conclusion seems to be that there's nothing wrong with it.

Yesterday afternoon, a hardware man came and took it away to open it up and examine its innards. I've just spoken to him, and his conclusion so far is that there's nothing wrong with it. He's going to give it to the guy who's got overall responsibility for the computers in my department, and he scoffs at the thought that someone told me I'd have it back in a day.

In its absence, I have an ancient Mac with an internet connection, but no network connection and no software, or my laptop which does have software but doesn't have a network connection, or an internet one unless I want to use dialup. So I've been working at home today, where between my laptop Mac and my desktop PC I have all the software I need, a decent internet connection, and the coolness of switching between two desks while choosing to listen to music because I'm not doing word-related work today, and it being music that I like.

Oh, and there's also the thing that my house is much less hot and stuffy than my office, the chairs are comfier, I don't have to wear shoes or listen to other people's phone conversations, and the commute's a breeze ;-)

So I'm doing it again tomorrow.

I just posted an entry with a music of 'The Cure' and a mood of 'cheerful' ;-)
