I was led to believe that the four friends, James, Sirius, Lupin and err... the other one... were the four names mentioned on the front and that they made the map. Second hand info only but I'm sure opinions on such matters are available via google if they are even remotely valid. :) I can't remember what the names on it were though so I can't realyl check if they make sense... :)
