Advent
As part of [livejournal.com profile] venta's Advent calendar exchange, I've been 'opening a door' on the Advent calendar that [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and [livejournal.com profile] lathany made, which was great. My particular favourite days were the one with the purple star and the one with the fat ginger cat. I'm so predictable :-)

Christmas Day: good
[livejournal.com profile] smiorgan and I spent yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] secretrebel, [livejournal.com profile] onebyone and [livejournal.com profile] _yakumo_. We've had non-family Christmasses before, but this is the first one we've had with friends, and it was lovely. We ate tremendous amounts of food, drank tremendous amounts of alcohol (I suspended my not drinking in honour of the occasion), and gave each other nice, well-chosen gifts (well, the gifts I received were nice and well-chosen*, and everyone else either feels the same about theirs or is a good actor, which is good enough ;-)

*Being variously by or about: Tori Amos, Neil Gaiman, fairies and Buffy the Vampire Slayer :-)

Christmas Day: bad
My Christmas is entirely secular. It's a festival of family and friends and food and gifts. So I rather embarrassed myself in a garage in the morning by sympathising with the guy who served me about the fact that he had to work. "I don't mind, I'm Hindu", he replied, and my cultural sensitivity points vanished in a puff of smoke (he was perfectly nice about it, and I did apologise). If I don't think about it, I assume everyone celebrates Christmas, because I forget it's a religious holiday. Bad me :-(

In other, worse, badness, on our way to Byzantium to peel potatoes in the morning, [livejournal.com profile] smiorgan and I passed the immediate aftermath of a bike-and-car accident, with a man lying on the road, and several others around him wielding mobile phones. They declined our offer of help, and when I passed again shortly afterwards, he was being loaded into an ambulance, but I thought of him on and off all day. I hope he's OK.

Yuletide challenge
Like last year, I participated in the While we tell of Yuletide Treasure fanfic secret santa, which is a thing of joy. I thought I'd bitten off more than I could chew when I received my assignment, but a last minute flash of inspiration struck, and I just about got the story submitted in time. It was only after my story was written that I remembered the other side of the exchange - someone was also writing a story for me! And it's a lovely one: Bedtime Story (with strawberries and cream), about Reggie from Dead Like Me (no sex, for those who are scared of fanfic, or think it's all about teh sex).

And despite my misgivings, the one I wrote seems to be going down well. The person I wrote it for left me a nice comment, as have a bunch of other people, and it's even been recommended in a couple of places, so yay. I can't tell you which one it is, because it's a secret santa project, and the author names won't be revealed till New Year's Day, but there are loads and loads of good stories there, in a whole load of obscure fandoms, and I've got a big pile of stories bookmarked to read, ranging from Jane Eyre to Peanuts, via Blackadder, Grey's Anatomy and Romeo and Juliet

Glad you liked it - I was worried it would seem a bit scrappy and amateurish. (The themes and ideas were all [livejournal.com profile] lathany, I did the sketches and programming.)

I liked a lot of the pics from your one, but easily my favourite is the beautiful star lantern. Maybe my son gets his fixation for lights from me...

Yes please - usability suggestions welcomed. (Yep, it was my first attempt at a Flash program.)
