Socks!

I have just finished my first proper knitted-to-a-pattern lace socks. Hoorah!



Sock-knitting is widely reputed to be addictive; it's possible I have succumbed: I'm plotting which pattern to make next (space invader socks! How cool is that?!), and which of many gorgeous available sock yarns I should buy...

I still have a scarf for you on my mental list of things to knit. I even bought some wool for it at one point, but it turned out to be a much brighter colour than I expected, and I've not seen anything else that seemed suitable. Next winter!

it strikes me that this would be a relatively easy route to cashmere socks, since that wouldn't take a lot of yarn, right? and cashmere socks!

But... if you want cashmere socks, probably the easiest (and cheapest!) thing to do is buy cashmere socks :-( Handknitted socks are ridiculously expensive compared to the bought variety (which is part of their appeal in a way).

I can recommend the Elfine socks, which are my current bus knitting - the lace is remarkably straightforward, and I was astonished to realise last night that in a week I've managed to get up to the heel of the first one!

They aren't that bad - first sock took a weekend of watching tv, listening to radio and knitting. I fear the second sock will take take longer, mainly due to lack of knitting time now.

Hee - I'm on sock two of the BMP socks. They are Not For Me, but are very cute, and so I might make another pair one day.

Do you have any idea how to make short-row heel/toe socks not look like giant bags? There's no instep shaping at all :-/

Re short-rows: no. My first two (not-to-a-pattern) pairs of socks were both short-rows (worked out from first principles by looking at bought socks!), and they're not too bad, but I don't know how to improve them if necesssary, I'm afraid :-(

I think I will, though perhaps after their recipient gets them! I have sooooooooo many FOs I've not got round to posting, mainly because I can't use the camera (technology passed me by).

I think perhaps SR socks are just inherently flawed. That and I have teenyfeet.

I've never knit socks. One day I will, I'm sure.

I am trying out a Möbius scarf from Cat Bordhi's A Treasury of Magical Knitting. It's pretty neat the way it works.

I'm not wearing them today, because when I said I'd finished them I lied I meant apart from tidying up the ends (although I am, of course, wearing different purple socks today).

Go on, knit socks: they're really good fun. And how can you resist gorgeous, gorgeous sock yarn?

And I'd love to see a pic of the scarf when it's finished... I have some half-formed thoughts about knitting mathematical objects like that, which I must get around to actually finishing thinking about eventually...
