Ghost campus, timewasting

It's a little after eight in the morning. Campus is deserted. There are a couple of other people in this pooled computer room, but they look like staff, too. My class doesn't start till 9.30, and the staff common room, where I'm going to sit and do some work until then, doesn't open till 8.30. And I have to be here at this ridiculous hour to have any hope of parking, so that I can get to my office on a satellite campus in time to do some work this afternoon.
The staff common room, incidentally, is technically not open to me, as I don't have an access card. I'm hoping someone will take pity on me, and not assume I'm just a student trying to sneak in. I'm currently deluding myself that I look like a student. The guy at the cinema last week thought I looked enough like a student that he asked me if I was (and didn't ask any of the other members of my posse), and gave me the discount anyway, despite some inefficiencies on my part in the 'getting student card' department. So that's good enough for me.
So it's now nearly 8.30, and this exercise in random burbling has been successful. I'm going to go and get some hot caffeine and do some work.

Date: 2003-01-29 06:40 am (UTC)I do like the Chilis, but I don't think much of the album By The Way. Zephyr Song I think was pretty weak to start with, and then it was massively overplayed on all the music TV channels.
Just my opinion, though. If you like it I don't think that makes you a bad person.

Date: 2003-01-29 06:48 am (UTC)Phew! I was getting worried there for a bit. Y'mean I can disagree with you about stuff and still be an OK person? Oh, that's such a relief ;-)
<suspicious> Or is it only this I can disagree with you on, and still be OK? What about other things we disagree on? Do they make me a bad person?
(Current music, incidentally, is Like a prayer on the radio, which I really like, but I suspect you don't ;-)

Date: 2003-01-29 06:58 am (UTC)I liked their last single, though. I like Zephyr Song as well, actually, but mostly in a low-key 'if it comes on the radio I'll be quite pleased' sort of way

So if I decide to agree with you, what are you going to about it? Eh? Eh?

Date: 2003-01-29 07:30 am (UTC)In the case of Buffy, I have to concede based on sheer weight of numbers that so many people can't all be evil.
Do they make me a bad person?
I'm sure some of them do. In the case of Britney, for example, there really isn't any excuse.
Like a prayer on the radio, which I really like, but I suspect you don't ;-)
I don't have any problems with it, actually. Perhaps surprisingly, I have no fundamental objections to Madonna, and although it isn't one of her outstanding efforts it isn't bad. It suffers from the fact that without the video it's all a bit pointless.
But then I'm listening to Lenny Kravitz at the moment, so I can hardly complain about mainstream pop.

Date: 2003-01-29 08:01 am (UTC)Nothing wrong with Britney. And it's perfectly respectable to like Baby One More Time.
Hmmm. Forming a plan ;-)

To which the obvious response is: which *are* her outstanding efforts? Although this may produce problems since I know all her music very well up to and including Erotica, and only the singles since, and those not well.

I've heard it enough times that it won't damage me or anything. Nevertheless, it's not respectable, big, or clever to like Britney.

Erm... I'd say Material Girl and Like a Virgin (not on any musical grounds, just for their impact), Vogue, Express Yourself, maybe Justify My Love and Live to Tell, and from the Ray of Light album Substitute for Love, Ray of Light and Nothing Really Matters.
But I don't know her work all that well, so I might be missing something out or thinking something else is better than it really is.

Date: 2003-01-29 08:35 am (UTC)The reason for the "maybe's" are respectively that Justify My Love might have aged into painful cliche while I wasn't watching, and Live To Tell might have bad lyrics in that I've selectively forgotten.
I also find it quite difficult to assess Madonna's song independently of the videos...
What's the third?

Date: 2003-01-29 08:46 am (UTC)This is possible. In fact, similar things are possible for me with most of her earliest stuff.
The third that you mentioned is Vogue. Which I know I still like, cos I heard it the other week.

'Borderline, feels like I'm going to lose my mind...'
And then forgets most of the rest of the words. D'oh.
You asked for it, Onebyone, I'm going to be playing antique Madonna tapes at you when I pick you up this evening. Assuming Smiorgan hasn't hidden them somewhere ;-)

Date: 2003-01-29 09:07 am (UTC)A whole car journey of antique Madonna songs might have some kind of sanity destroying effect.

Date: 2003-01-29 09:19 am (UTC)Further research suggests that Like a Prayer stands up rather better than I remembered, and Express Yourself rather worse.

Date: 2003-01-29 10:32 am (UTC)Sure, there are worse bands out there, but none that annoys me quite so much.
I think there is about half of a Chilis song that I actually like.
Red Not Chilli Peppers

Or something.
