The Brit awards

I didn't watch the awards. I barely noticed that they were happening, but they're the subject of general office discussion this morning, so I went in search of a list of winners.

Grump. I don't find them objectionable by Brits standards, it's Brits standards I find objectionable. The 'best song' nominations! Honestly! For what value of 'best'?

As that category is specifically "voted for my listeners of commercial radio", I would have said that the criteria for winning is unashamedly sales figures/popular appeal.

Which is fair enough - if I want to find out what the best songs of the year are from the standpoint of people like me, I go to a poll in a publication which is bought by a subsection of society whose tastes coincide reasonably by mine. I think this is the only good and fair way of rating songs: if you want vast popular appeal not to be a deciding factor, go to a poll where the vast majority of the populace has been excluded.
