A (much older) colleague just came into the office, sat down opposite me, and declared that she had gone to see Master and Commander last night, and that it was rife with gay subtext. I told her I'd been watching Hornblower recently, and ditto. The phrase 'rum, sodomy and the lash' hit the conversation, and we both lamented that there wasn't more of it around. I love my colleagues :-)

[livejournal.com profile] killalla, I'm notnotnot asking you to send me links for M&C slash. Emphatically not. Peddling porn at work probably not a great idea. Shame, though. I'm sure she'd love it.

(Oh, and, umm, inappropriately, GIP!)

After seeing Master & Commander I've started reading the Patrick O'Brian books it was all based on. His take on it was that they seemed to have a rather different view of sexuality on board ship (e.g. anything goes as long as it's discreet, cabin boys were often precisely that, the officers cheerfully setting sailors loose in a port when they land and purging the whores from the ship before they set sail). From what I've gleaned, there were much more serious issues on board - e.g. gambling or mutinous plotting.

Well, you're obviously going to have to recommend the Hornblower movies to said colleague. But, if she starts reading the Aubrey/Maturin Series (Yes, that's the technical term for it, note the "/"!) I'm sure she'll be able to come to her own conclusions. And if you do decide you want links, you know who you can talk to - collectively, Age of Sail fandom has some of the finest writers I know. On the serious side, there are also an number of interesting and scholarly articles on life in the Royal Navy of theis period, treatment of sodomy under the Articles of War, etc. etc. And, in conclusion - Yay! Rum!

you know, i actually have a coworker who's weird enough and with whom i am good enough friends that once, in the context of a slashy conversation, i cautiously said "does the word 'slash' mean anything to you?"

when the answer was a blank look, i hastily backed away from the subject. i live in fear of finding out that someone i work with is actually one of my favorite porn writers porn writers.
