I am a happy triskellian. Someone I haven't seen for years and years, and who I never knew very well anyway recognised me from my cartoon-doll-me icon :-)

Not if you read the whole thread rather than just the bit that triskellian linked to.

Triskellian linked to LNR's post, rather than the whole thread. So if you follow that link, you miss out on the previous few posts which make it all make sense.

I've run into this problem a few times. Linking to individual posts is a strange business - ideally you'd want it to display the whole thread, but take you to the right place in it, not cut out a subsection of the thread.

Yeah, it's not good. But the alternative is linking the whole thread and leaving people hanging around wandering which comment is referred to.

But there is a way of jumping directly to the comment, cos that's what LJ does when you post a comment with the 'show me my comment' link. I'm going to investigate...

OK, the link to my last comment in this thread, showing the whole thread, is http://www.livejournal.com/users/triskellian/86547.html?view=380435#t380435, whereas the link just to that comment, without showing the whole thread, is http://www.livejournal.com/users/triskellian/86547.html?thread=380435#t380435.

But http://www.livejournal.com/users/triskellian/86547.html#t380435 also works. So the lesson is to remove this 'thread=' and 'view=' rubbish from the links LJ provides. Hurrah! I've learnt something!

Also glad to know I wasn't just being dim... Usually I *can* tell when something is a section rather than a full thread but that's mainly because the thread is a marathon thing with page numbers!

No - it's a response to a comment from me. The 'Read comments' link above shows you that it's just showing some of the comments and not all.

I've changed the link now to show the thread starting with LNR's response to Venta.
