Why VCDs are better than DVDs

I can take screencaps from VCDs on my laptop; it won't let me from DVDs. This post would be a GIP, except that I'm worried about possible spoilerphobes (looks questioningly at lathany). The icon in question doesn't contain any plot spoilers, it's just spoilery about the schtick of "Smile Time".

Nope, none of those work when the DVD player is on, even if it's paused. The only way I've found to do it (other than by getting new software) is from the Terminal, but that works just fine, so I'm happy ;-)
