secretrebel made me an icon! I'm a bit scared of it, with the big-eyed-stare, but it's exciting 'cos no one's ever made me an icon before ;-)

Today, we've had a multi-parental conference. Between them, they've offered us a substantial amount of money and a honeymoon, approved of some of our choices and ideas about the wedding (including the venue) and disapproved of others (including some of my dress ideas, annoyingly but irrelevantly).

Yeah, this is the bit where it all gets kind of tricky trying not to step on people's toes, piss them off, whatever.

<sigh> Yup. I've been trying to make it clear that we welcome their comments, suggestions and advice, but that they have to accept that we might not take them, and that the final decisions are all ours, even on things where they're paying. It helps (I think) that we can afford to pay for it all ourselves, so we're not actually reliant on them for anything. And they're all used to both of us being stubborn and opinionated ;-)

Sounds like it should all work out okay. Our lot pretty much left us to it in terms of organisation, except for items where they necessarily had to be involved (e.g. my mum made my wedding dress and therefore had significant input into what she thought would actually work - given that she is the needlework-aware one, and that it wound up combining three different patterns, I was happy to listen)

Remembering what you were saying earlier about approval and objections... did they manage to approve and disapprove respectively of the correct things ? Or will they need coaching before they get it right ?!

The rules seem to be more complicated when it's all of them at once. There was one thing I mentioned casually, almost as a joke, and the mothers both reacted with horror and said I couldn't possibly, which does indeed now make me want to do it, where I didn't reallly want to before ;-)

But other things need more work - they don't seem to have understood the complicated rules involved, and weren't at all surprised and disapproving of things I expected them to be, and objected strongly to things I had no idea they'd even have an opinion on!

Good news about the honeymoon and extra cash but a bit impolitic of parental units to criticise your dress choice. What do they want? White? *snigger*

Send them some pictures of the goth garb for weddings we found on the net - that'll make them thankful for your actual choice!
