Obligatory gay marriage post
Feb. 20th, 2004 11:48 pm(But lacking the rainbow flag, to avoid
onebyone's 'meme'-filtering-eye skimming over. And not because I can't be bothered to go and copy the code. No.)
I'm getting married in September (yes, you all knew that already, because I go on about it all the time). I'm able to do this because the person with whom I want to spend the rest of my life happens to have genitals that are shaped differently from mine. Our wedding guests will include people in relationships just as committed and long-term as ours, who are not able to get married because their genitals happen to be the same shape. This saddens me, and, contrary to the claims of those who oppose equality in marriage, it weakens the whole institution for me.

Date: 2004-02-21 02:33 pm (UTC)thanks for saying this. I adore weddings -- they're all about love and what's nicer than love? -- but there's sometimes a little pang that it'll quite possibly never be me wearing a big-ass meringue dress, surrounded by smiling friends and family (def not the latter). On the whole I'm still incredibly lucky in my life and love, but hey, dress!
I think very few heterosexual couples are actually ever conscious of their constant heterosexual privilege (like I, as a white person, am rarely conscious of my constant white privilege).
